Duke the Dog
Have you ever heard of a disabled dog using a wheelchair?
Duke the dog was a stray, rescued from the Des Moines River in early 2011 by two amateur photographers. He had been shot, paralyzed, thrown into the river and left to fend for himself.
The wonderful people at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL), along with the efforts of the Iowa State University Animal Hospital, saved Duke’s life. Handicappedpets.com donated a customized dog wheelchair to Duke, and he is now wheeling around like a pro in his forever home.
Overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, his new owner Susan Hollar wanted to thank those who showed support and love for this dog many have never even met but felt compassion for.
“Duke has joined my little family and I could not be more excited. I feel so lucky to be the one to show him what love is all about. The ARL has done a magnificent job with Duke! They have been there every step of the way with his rescue, constant care, and the important decision to bring him to the best – Iowa State University.
“Working with the kind people at the ARL and the ISU animal hospital has been an amazing experience! My sincere thank you to all of those who have donated to the ARL in Duke’s honor. While Duke is a strong survivor, he could not have done it without you. I am also so thankful for all of those who have followed his story, prayed for him, stayed positive and hoped for a happy ending. Or, should I say, a new beginning. I am honored to be the one to give him that. Duke’s story doesn’t end here – now he has his own Facebook page with pictures and updates. Please find him at Facebook.com/SweetDuke.
“Thank you again to all of the Duke lovers!”

Duke made his first public appearance since his adoption at the ARL’s Raise Your Paw event in April 2011 and has raised over $2,500 for the Dog Walk & Fido Fest to help more animals just like him!
