Love at First Meow
“Being involved with an animal shelter for more than twenty years, I have heard thousands of stories of the special relationship humans experience with animals. I never tire of the stories. They confirm that there are countless numbers of people everywhere who love their animals. It also tells me that the connections or bonds we have with our animals can fulfill our lives.
“It makes sense, really.
“Pets are with you through it all—marriages and divorces, moves, new jobs and deaths in our family. They spend all the major moments of our lives with us. They listen. They never judge. After a hard day we come home to a house where a tail-wagging dog can hardly wait to greet us; or a cat runs to the door and meows a hello. They don’t care what we look like or about our moods. They are just happy we are with them. We’re their whole world. Those of you who have experienced unique bonds with animals have already discovered this special relationship.
“Sometimes, a connection can be immediate. At the shelter I have probably met hundreds of thousands of animals in my 20 years. While we love them all, we connect on a deeper level with only a handful. When I started volunteering at the shelter, I walked dogs and spent very little time with the cats (completely different now, of course!) —until one day— a cat caught my eye. I spent the next week not being able to get that cat out of my mind.
“The next week, I adopted him, my very first cat, and my life changed. Azzurro and I connected from the minute we looked at each other. When I moved the first time, I realized the special bond. (Not all bonds are love at first sight; some take time to form, yet lasting bonds indeed can still form.)
“Azzuro spent the first two nights in our new home literally sleeping on top of my head (he typically never slept on the bed). It was like he had to know I was there to know he was okay in this new place. It happened when I moved a second and third time as well. Just as humans turn to animals for comfort, animals take comfort in their human families. “
What is cat story do you have to share? How did you find your first cat, and how did you bond? Post a comment. We’d love to hear about that!
